A delegation from COÉTICA participated at the Parliament of Catalonia in the institutional event dedicated to presenting the programme commemorating the Millennium of the “Peace and Truce Associations” (1027–2027). This initiative pays tribute to the first of these assemblies, held in “Toulouges” in the region of “Roussillon” in 1027, in the presence of Bishop “Oliba of Vic”.

These assemblies emerged in a historical context marked by violence and fragmented authority, where they established the basic foundations of coexistence and a system of population safeguards. The “Peace of God” sought to protect individuals and property, while the “Truce” defined periods during which hostilities were suspended. Today, these assemblies are considered among the earliest expressions of a parliamentary system in Europe, and the seed of an institutional tradition based on covenant, law, and representation.

The event was attended by the President of the Parliament of Catalonia, “Josep Rull i Andreu”, who delivered the keynote address, affirming that this legacy is not merely historical heritage, but a “continuing mandate”. He stressed that peace is not simply an ideal, but a democratic necessity which, in a world still affected by war and inequality, requires commitment, action, and strong institutions.

The participation of COÉTICA is framed within its interest in the “common human ground”—the shared field of values between civilisations—in the domains of peace, humanitarian action, and compassion. The Foundation sees this commemoration as a valuable opportunity to build bridges between cultures and to act as a “human conscience” that reminds societies of their shared roots.

At the conclusion of the event, the President of COÉTICA, Dr. Lakhdar Hammadi, stated:

“It is a source of great pride to be present at the Parliament of Catalonia, the historical heir to the spirit of coexistence, on the occasion of the Millennium of the ‘Truce of God’. Our presence today embodies our commitment to the common human ground in the fields of peace, compassion, and humanitarian action. Today, more than ever, we need to build bridges between cultures to fulfil the mission of the ‘human conscience’ that reminds humanity of its roots and its historical initiatives in coexistence and fraternity, in an age that seems to have lost its memory. From the heart of this historical institution, we reaffirm that peace is a shared human heritage and an enduring ethical covenant, bringing us together to build a future based on compassion and the common good.”
